How It Began
A few years ago, an American colleague visited Japan for the first time. We spent an evening at a mountain onsen — warm water, steam rising into the night air, silence you could feel. He sank in and didn't speak for twenty minutes.
Before he flew home, he told me: "I wish I could come back to this. But I can't exactly fly to Japan every time I need to decompress."
Months later, I was soaking in my own bathtub in Tokyo with a packet of nyuyokuzai — Japanese bath salts that let you enjoy the atmosphere of famous hot spring regions at home. The water had turned a soft milky color. And in that quiet moment, I thought of him.
So I packed a box. Eight different bath salts, each one inspired by a different hot spring region — evoking Kusatsu's mountain air, Beppu's warmth, Hakone's calm. I wrote a short note about each one and mailed it to the States.
He called me the next week. "I just sat in my bathtub for forty minutes. I haven't done that in years."
